His cartographers had found the flaw: Columbus had grossly underestimated the size of the earth. They were right to doubt him. But Spain, lacking Portugal's expertise, its charts, its generations of seafaring knowledge, said yes anyway. And so an empire was born, a gamble made by men who didn't know how wrong they should have been. Spain hit the Americas like a force of nature, blind to the odds, and the gamble paid off beyond anything Portugal would ever achieve. Surrounded by enemies on every frontier, Spain still ruled half the known world. Flanders. The Americas. The Philippines. Garrisons spread across Italy and the Barbary coast of North Africa. And now, by force of arms, Portugal and its colonies as well. An empire sustained not only by gold, but by steel, held together by professional armies whose iron core were the veteran tercios. And wherever the soldiers marched, the Catholic Church followed, carrying the cross into jungles and islands the sword had only just opened, binding new souls to old Rome with the same firmness that bound new lands to the crown.
