The First Fascist State Edit

Following the chaos and disorder of the First World War, the kingdom of Italy faced insurrection from all sides of the political spectrum. Socialists were exploiting the country’s weaker state to demand essential reforms for the working class. Nationalists were disappointed at the country’s poor performance in the war and failure to achieve territorial gain. Out of this turnout came fascism, a new revolutionary ideology created by an ideologue of both sides, Benito Mussolini. Mussolini used his new ideology to forge a centralised Italian state (supposedly) destined to reclaim the glory of the Roman Empire. To do this he centralised all the powers and forces of the country (both social and economic). By 1935 Italy had the second largest share of nationalised industry, only behind the USSR. Following the rise of N@zism in Germany, Mussolini would go on to subordinate himself and his nation under their leadership, to the dismay of many less radical elements of the party and conservatives. This decision would eventually lead to the country’s downfall in the Second World War. While political violence in Italy remained relatively muted between 1922-1943, the Italian civil war and especially the Italian Social Republic (a fascist breakaway state led by Mussolini after his deposition) would commit numerous terrible atrocities against the Italian people. In 1945, Mussolini was captured by Italian partisans and communists while trying to flee north, he was subsequently executed and strung up in Milan (the original birthplace of Fascism).
