Thai Trains & Railways: Thonburi Railway Station
#Thailand #train #bangkok Originally known as Bangkok Noi Railway Station, Thonburi Railway Station opened on the 19th June 1903, and served as the terminus of the Southern Line of Thailand’s rail network. The original building was designed by German architect Karl Döhring in the style of European brick expressionism. In 1942, the station was renamed Thonburi Station and during WWII it became strategically important as the Japanese base of operations for supplying the construction of the Burma Railway. Because of this, it was severely damaged by repeated Allied bombing in December 1944 and March 1945. After the War, it was rebuilt, though its importance decreased towards the end of the 20th century as more Southern Line trains were re-routed to terminate at Bangkok's main Hua Lamphong Station. A new station (known as Bangkok Noi Station until 2003, now known as Thon Buri Station) was built about 900 meters from the original station to replace it as the southern terminus. In 2013, the old station building was renovated to serve as the site of a medical museum. In this video, I take a look around the old station, visit the new station and also manager to wander around the nearby Thonburi Locomotive Garage which is home to a few steam locomotives. Filmed in March 2023. ☕ Please support my channel by buying me a coffee here: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/willetts... Thanks! 🙏
