The Problem With Gatekeeping in Alternative Communities

GATEKEEPING Is there a place for it anymore (or ever) in subcultures, especially alternative ones? Should there be an entrance exam where you can only be allowed into a subculture if you've studied your history? Should you only be allowed into a subculture if you can "name 5 songs" by a band? Should it be a requirement that you consider founding bands of a movement your favourite artists, that you place them on a pedestal over contemporary artists in a scene? Should subcultures be allowed to evolve and change -- even if they are barely recognizable from how they looked/sounded when they began?
