The Transported of KwaNdebele” (1983) is a well-known photographic series by South African photographer David Goldblatt. The work documents the daily journeys of Black workers who were forced to commute extremely long distances between the apartheid homeland Kwa-Ndebele and the city of Pretoria. In The Transported of KwaNdebele, Goldblatt photographed commuters inside buses before dawn. The images show: Workers sleeping while seated upright Tired, expressionless faces illuminated by dim bus lights People packed tightly together A quiet atmosphere of endurance and fatigue The photographs are intimate and restrained. Instead of dramatic protest imagery, Goldblatt shows the quiet violence of the system through ordinary daily life. The photo book expands on this series.
