MUSICAL MAGIC IN GOTHENBURG! š Backstage Secrets & Rooftop Cocktails
What happens when a Stockholm theatre dresser packs up his sunglasses and heads west? Absolute magic. If youāre new here, welcome! Iām a single gay guy living my best life, usually found stitching up a storm as a costume supervisor in Stockholm, cooking up plant-based feasts, or filming everything on my trusty iPhone. But today, we are taking this show on the road to Gothenburg! We are officially opening up the archive because I spent two incredible years working as a dresser and costume supervisor for the hit musical SĆ„ som i himmelen (As It Is in Heaven) during its massive run in Stockholm. Now, the magic is coming to Gothenburgās historic Lorensbergsteatern, and Iām here to pass the torch, share the wardrobe secrets, and help the local team get everything fitting like a glove. 07:00 AM ā SUNGLASSES & VEGAN BREAKFASTS Yes, I am absolutely that person wearing sunglasses inside at seven oāclock in the morning. My excuse? It is far too early, but duty calls! Before the chaotic beauty of wardrobe fittings begins, fuel is required. I sat down at the gorgeous Elite Park Avenue Hotelāa staple luxury hotel located right on Avenyn, the main cultural boulevard of Gothenburgāfor a truly sumptuous vegan breakfast. Joining me is the incredibly talented costume designer Anna Hagert, the creative visionary responsible for the visual identity and wardrobe aesthetics of this production. Over plates of fresh plant-based goodies, we plotted out our day. As someone who loves cooking vegan food at home and always hunts down the best dairy-free spots, the breakfast spread here absolutely passed the test. THE WARDROBE FITTINGS & LORENSBERGSTEATERN With coffee in system, it was time to head to Lorensbergsteatern, a beautiful centenary theatre in Gothenburg known for its rich history of comedy, music, and drama. The mission today? Meeting up with the wonderful Ulla Wedin, the resident costume supervisor and expert dresser at Lorensbergsteatern. Passing on the knowledge from the Stockholm run felt amazing. We spent the morning doing actor fittings, adjusting hems, and ensuring every single fabric moves perfectly under the stage lights. The fittings went excellently! There is nothing quite like the rhythm of a bustling wardrobe departmentāit completely satisfies my inner textile nerd. A TALE OF TWO THEATRES After nailing the fittings, Anna and I snuck away for a quick industry field trip. We went to visit backstage at the nearby Gƶteborgs stadsteater (The Gothenburg City Theatre), Swedenās oldest municipal theatre, renowned for its cutting-edge contemporary drama. Stepping into another theatreās creative belly is always so inspiring. Whenever Iām not working on a show, you can find me going to the theatre as a fan, so this was pure heaven. Eventually, the early morning caught up with me, so it was back to our hotel for a much-needed lie-down. A quick power nap later, and we were ready for round two. Anna and I headed back to Gƶteborgs stadsteater, but this time, as audience members. We saw their stunning production of En alldeles sƤrskild dag (A Special Day), a brilliant stage adaptation based on the iconic 1977 Ettore Scola film, which originally starred Sophia Loren and Marcello Mastroianni and explores a deeply moving, unexpected connection between a lonely housewife and her anti-fascist gay neighbor in 1930s Italy. The production was absolutely fabulous. The acting was nuanced, the direction was incredibly sharp, and the costume choices? Impeccable, obviously! TOSO & ROOFTOP COCKTAILS AT JOHANNA To celebrate a successful day of theatre magic, we were met after the show by none other than the director of SĆ„ som i himmelen, Markus Virta! Markus is the brilliant visionary director known for breathing vibrant, emotional life into major musical productions across Scandinavia. He treated us to an unforgettable dinner at Toso, a spectacular Asian-fusion restaurant located at the top of Avenyn, famous for its dramatic, sultry interiors and a menu that easily accommodates a vegan lifestyle. The plant-based dishes were fab and the staff was superb! To cap off the ultimate Gothenburg night, we headed to Johanna on Sƶdra Hamngatan. A newer addition to the city's central heartbeat right by Brunnsparken, Johanna is a modern, high-end steakhouse paired with a massive, stylish, and sun-soaked rooftop terrace up on the 7th floor. The vibe here is sophisticated yet relaxed, boasting a dedicated cocktail bar with an extensive martini focus.
