But the wildlife doesn't seem to mind one bit. This afternoon the other side of the island was alive. Geese settled on the shore completely unbothered by the heat. Ducks drifting lazily on the water. Birds wheeling and calling overhead — their song carrying right across the river in the still warm air. And beneath the surface — carp. Big ones. Moving slow and close to the bank in the low warm water, almost close enough to touch. On a late heatwave afternoon like this the other side of the island feels like a completely different world to the lock and the weir. Quieter. Wilder. More secret somehow.
