Woodturning Storytime - Revealing the Beauty of Spalted Wood

In this week’s woodturning video, we’ll be making a spalted hackberry hollow form. This is a perfect project for any woodturner as it really helps you with developing your eye for perfecting the shape of a piece. Harry and I really wanted to try to highlight the spalting in this wood as best as we could so be began turning between centers so we could reorient the wood as we thought necessary. As you’ll find out in the video Harry had some sentimental attachment to this wood so it brought back a story from his early days that he shares with you. It sounds like Harry needs to write a book! The finishing process involved sanding sealer, Ack’s Abrasive paste and polish and lastly Hampshire Sheen High Gloss Wax.
