Wewelsburg Castle is far more than just a medieval castle. It was chosen by Heinrich Himmler as the ideological center of the SS and was intended to be transformed into a cult site and center of power for the so-called SS Order. But behind these plans lay not only megalomania and ideology, but also immeasurable suffering. Together with Alex and Tim from the YouTube channel History Project, I embark on a journey of discovery. We not only examine the dark history of the SS, but also the much older past of Wewelsburg – from its origins in the Middle Ages to its later instrumentalization by the Nazi regime. In the video, we visit, among other places, the famous SS Obergruppenführer Hall, the crypt, the former SS shooting range, and the grounds of the Niederhagen concentration camp, whose prisoners were forced to work on the expansion of Wewelsburg under inhumane conditions. Many of them did not survive this forced labor.
