A B-17 Over the Ruhr - Alles ist Kaput, Abgeschossen - B-17F 42-5877 With Don Russell Part of Strategic Bombing week on WW2TV More Strategic Bombing content on WW2TV • Strategic Bombing in WWII Lieutenant Colonel Donald G. Russell (U.S. Air Force, retired) is Deputy Commandant of Cadets at Virginia Tech in the USA. Don's Grandfather was a B-17 pilot and in 1943 his aircraft 42-5877 was shot down on a mission to the Ruhr valley and Germany's industrial heartland. During the show, Don will explain the reasons behind Operation Pointblank and run through all the stages of the mission from briefing to take off and of course the bomb run itself. Then he will elaborate on the cause of the loss of the B17 and the aftermath on the ground. The story of this crew and mission will serve as a fitting tribute to all the 8th Air force crews undergoing daylight bombing missions in WWII.
