Operation Martlet (with WW2 Roadtrips) - How to be a Historian
Operation Martlet (with WW2 Roadtrips) - How to be a Historian With John Delaney Part of our Normandy series • DDay and the Battle of Normandy Part of our British Army series • British Army in WWII Part of our Allied Armoured units series • Allied Armoured Units in WWII My guest today us military historian and tank expert John Delaney. John together with Josh Mowll, graphic designer, novelist and videographer, have joined forces to explore some fascinating but lesser-known World War Two battles. They explore the battlefields, walking in the footsteps of those who fought. Using high quality maps, and actual wartime film and photographs, they analyse what happened and why. / @ww2roadtrips In today's show we discuss Operation Martlet, a battle that John has covered with 13 episodes (so far) on WW2 Roadtrips. We will talk about content creation and bringing some of Normandy's less well known battles to a wider audience. Operation Martlet was part of a series of British attacks to capture Caen and the area to the west and south. It was a preliminary operation undertaken on 25 June 1944 by XXX Corps of the British Second Army, to capture Rauray and the area around Noyers. The attack was to protect the right flank of VIII Corps as it began Operation Epsom, an offensive into the Odon Valley west of Caen, on 26 June. The 50th (Northumbrian) Infantry Division and the 49th (West Riding) Infantry Division were to capture Juvigny-sur-Seulles, Vendes and Rauray, to prevent German counter-attacks against VIII Corps from the area of the Rauray Spur and then extend the attack towards Noyers and Aunay-sur-Odon. John Delaney's ‘World War Two itch’ started when he was a child and he found the military history section in Dudley library. He went on to complete undergraduate and postgraduate degrees, specialising in the history of armoured warfare. John is now in his 33rd year as a curator at the Imperial War Museum. He started in the museum’s photo archive, then moved on after six years to become Curator, Vehicles & Aircraft at Duxford, ending up as Head of the Museum’s Second World War curatorial team. Now semi-retired he still can’t get rid of the itch, so now he makes YouTube videos about the war instead! His partner Josh Mowll honed his skills as a graphic designer at a national Sunday newspaper and is responsible for all the maps, animations, drone footage, and studio and location filming that forms the heart of World War Two Roadtrips. He is also a published novelist, professional videographer and bangin rock n’roll bass player!
