Learn To Love Pivot Tables In 13 Minutes (THE 5 STEPS EXPLAINED)

Want to learn pivot tables fast? Conquer your fear of Excel pivot tables? Create Excel analyses that are beautiful, robust and that you’ll love using? In this video, I walk you through my 5 step process for creating Excel pivot tables in just 13 minutes. My confession: I found pivot tables pretty horrible for the first half of my career. The discoveries I share in today’s video gradually made things easier. And now, I love pivot tables as part of my Excel toolkit. I do something strange to get started: I actually print out the dataset, or at least part of it! Though not great from an environmental perspective, I find actually ‘feeling’ the dataset helps me get started. The first step is super simple: I tick the columns I am interested in and cross the ones I can ignore. From here, I develop 2-3 questions about the dataset I wish to answer with pivot tables. Suddenly, we have direction - and pivot tables seem a little less scary. Now, time to dive in at the deep end and create a pivot table in Excel. I show you how to do this the right way in the video – a well-organised and tabulated dataset really helps. Then, you must conquer the pivot table fields interface. I recommend creating the table on a new sheet so you can simply delete the whole sheet if things go wrong. This is a safe space - play! And build your confidence … For years I thought it impossible to analyse continuous data (the example we use in the video is commute times) with a pivot table. I was wrong. Discovering the ‘group’ option was a real breakthrough for me. In the video, I show you how to quickly set up the pivot table for continuous data. It’s common to hit a wall with pivot table analysis at some point. So, what to do? Delve further into obscure pivot table functions? Reach for Claude? Please, no. When you hit a wall with pivot table analysis, zoom out. In the video, I show you how to re-visit and remodel the dataset with simple Excel formulae to deal with tricky post code analysis. You’re now in command of some serious Excel data analysis – nice! But typical pivot table issues are likely to persist and, for me, these are anxiety-inducing. In the final step, I show you how to control pivot table sizing, add interactive features and implement a simple and attractive formatting look.
