The gardens of Andalusia are as diverse as the region's nature. Irrigation, however, always plays a prominent role. Large parts of the area are extremely water-poor; traditional Moorish irrigation techniques continue to shape gardening to this day. The documentary tells how the people of Andalusia manage to bring their gardens to life despite the dry climate. In addition to Europe's only semi-desert, there are barren mountain landscapes, fertile plains with grain fields, and hilly landscapes covered with olive trees. The climate of the Alpujarra, south of the Sierra Nevada, is characterized by hot summers and cold winters. Over 2,000 plant species have adapted to this extreme climate. The mountains are crisscrossed by a network of water canals, which the Moors built as early as the 16th century to channel water from the Sierra Nevada down to the villages. In Granada, the Carmenes in the Albaicín are an integral part of urban culture. Seclusion and privacy have always been part of Arab garden culture. Water features provide cooling and moisture in the summer heat. Like all gardens in the Arab world, the Carmenes are meant to reflect the heavenly paradise on earth.
