Stóra Dímun
is surrounded by the sea with steep cliffsides on all sides of the island. If you arrive by boat, you can only go ashore on a small natural harbour when the sea is calm. After stepping ashore you have to walk under the cliffs to the east till you find the place where you climb up around 90 meters in a cliff on a narrow track to get up on the island itself. Fortunately the circumstances have improved a lot the last 30-40 years and today you can get on and off the island three times a week by helicopter. For centuries only one family has lived on the island. The past years Eva and Jógvan Jón have lived there with their two children and Janus, Eva’s brother, and Erla his wife with their three children. Together, they run the farm Dímunargarður.
