She Refused to Leave This Island | Gotska Sandön
Out in the middle of the Baltic Sea there is a low, sandy, pine-covered island that barely shows up on the map. Its history, however, is anything but boring! Some bizarre things have happened on Gotska Sandön. In this video, we'll see how it formed in the middle of the sea, look over its history in writing, and see why it was so feared by sailors. We'll look at its stories of government troubles, shipwreck plundering, and the life of a widow who chose to stay on the island for decades. Using maps, satellite imagery, and historical sources (many of them only in Swedish), we'll look at what life was like on this remote island over the years and how it ended up with such a dense and odd past.
