Meligalas | Here was written one of the darkest pages in the history of Greece The battle of Meligalas took place in Meligalas of Messinia from 13 to 15 September 1944 between ELAS, EAM resistance army and the dosilogos Security Battalions (TA). EAM / ELAS guerrilla groups have been operating in the occupied Peloponnese since 1942 and in 1943 began to consolidate their dominance in the area. To deal with them, the German authorities organized the TA, one of which was based in Meligalas and which participated in anti-guerrilla operations and mass retaliation against the sympathetic population. As the liberation was approaching, the security guards were targeted by ELAS. After the withdrawal of the occupying German forces from the Peloponnese in September 1944, and after the battle of Kalamata, part of the dosilog administration took refuge in Meligalas where a force of about 1,000 battalion guards was fortified. There they were surrounded by ELAS units, with a total force of about 1,200 guerrillas.After three days of fierce fighting, the guerrillas stormed the battalions' fortifications and entered the city. The predominance of ELAS was followed by a massacre, during which executions of captured battalion guards and some civilians were carried out in a nearby "well". The number of those executed is estimated at around 800 to 1100. After the news was spread, the representatives of EAM / ELAS worked in most areas of Greece for the smooth transfer of power, reducing the effects of retaliation.
