雪×温泉×美食｜ryugon最上級スイートで完成する冬旅

In early March 2024, we stayed at Ryugon, a traditional Japanese hotel in Minamiuonuma City, Niigata Prefecture. Although it took a while to upload the video, we thought we would upload it so that you could see what this traditional Japanese hotel in Minamiuonuma looks like in March, when there is still snow remaining, and consider it as an option when choosing a lodging. Ryugon is located about a 30-minute drive from Echigo-Yuzawa Station in Niigata Prefecture, and there is a regular shuttle bus (reservations must be made by 6:00 PM the day before your stay) from its sister hotel, Hatago Isen, located in front of the station. It is about an 8-minute drive from Muikamachi IC on the Kan-etsu Expressway, or a 6-minute taxi ride or 20-minute walk from Muikamachi Station on the JR Joetsu Line. On a vast site of approximately 16,000 tsubo (approx. 53,000 m²) stands a quaint building that was relocated and renovated from a magnificent 280-year-old traditional Japanese mansion that is partially registered as a tangible cultural property. This time, we stayed in the spacious 114.5m² Villa Suite Terrace, which was renovated using the beams and pillars of a stately old house, which could also be called a VIP room of "rich farmer's mansion.” The water basin beyond the wide terrace reflects the magnificent natural scenery of Mt. Sakado. In one corner of the basin is an open-air bath, which is fed by water directly from the Muikamachi Onsen hot spring source. It is a truly pleasant hot spring. The snow that fell the next morning allowed us to enjoy a snow-viewing bath. Dinner was a full course of Yukiguni Gastronomy. They served creative cuisine using local ingredients and incorporating the food culture of the Snow Country. Every dish was ingeniously prepared and delicious. The rice, made with top-quality Uonuma Koshihikari rice, exclusive to the Shiozawa area, cooked in a clay pot, was particularly exceptional. The pairings of sake and wine were all from Niigata Prefecture and were served to perfectly complement the food. The staff were all very warm and welcoming, and we had a great time chatting with them at the bar while enjoying their original wild grass liqueur. This luxury hot spring inn has been renovated in a modern style to allow for a comfortable stay while retaining the nostalgic atmosphere of an old Japanese house, and we were able to spend a wonderful, fulfilling time in a calm atmosphere.
