General rehearsal, 28 March 2025, Merinos Atatürk Kültür Kongre Merkezi, Bursa, Türkiye František Hertl, Concerto for double bass and orchestra 1. movement: Allegro risoluto performed by: Božo Paradžik, soloist Bursa State Symphony Orchestra Tolga Taviş, conductor František Hertl (1906–1973) composed this concerto in 1957, at the height of his artistic maturity. Even nearly 70 years after its creation, this remarkable concerto has remained largely unknown for various reasons. One of the main obstacles has been the unavailability of the sheet music, which has been out of print for approximately 40 years. A brand-new piano reduction is scheduled to be published in the second half of 2026. I hope this concerto will finally gain the recognition it deserves. It is melodic, emotional, and highly virtuosic, offering the soloist many opportunities to shine. Hertl’s brilliant and transparent orchestration allows even the softest tones of the double bass to project clearly through the orchestra.
