I Visited Taiwan’s Most Beautiful Mountain… and Saw Nothing 🇹🇼 - Day 7

Most people visit Yangmingshan for the postcard views. I visited on the one day the mountain decided to disappear. What started with me getting lost before the tour had even begun turned into a day wandering through thick fog, hiking Qingtiangang Grassland, exploring Yangmingshan National Park, learning about Taiwan’s history, and ending the day soaking in the famous Beitou Hot Springs. Ironically, we barely saw the sweeping landscapes or volcanic scenery Yangmingshan is known for. The fog was so dense that, at times, we couldn’t even see the person walking a few steps ahead of us. And yet… I don’t regret going. There’s something strangely beautiful about watching a mountain hide itself. If I were to do this trip again though, I’d skip the guided tour. I’d make my own way to Qingtiangang Grassland, spend hours hiking the trails at my own pace, and reward myself with a relaxing soak in Beitou Hot Springs on the way back. It feels like a much more local and memorable way to experience this part of Taiwan. Our guide, Mr. David, was incredibly kind, and I genuinely enjoyed learning about Chiang Kai-shek, Madame Chiang, and the stories that helped shape modern Taiwan. But sometimes the best memories come from having nowhere to rush off to. Travel isn’t always about perfect weather or perfect itineraries. Sometimes it’s about embracing the unexpected, finding beauty in what you didn’t plan for, and letting a place reveal itself on its own terms.
