Вот Что Будет, Когда На Земле Закончится Газ
The winter frost in northern Europe reveals the frightening fragility of civilization: a gas outage instantly triggers a chain reaction of boilers cooling and homes freezing, reminding millions that their familiar comfort rests on a thin pipe extending beyond the horizon. Contrary to the popular myth that natural gas is about to run out forever, proven global reserves amount to approximately 209 trillion cubic meters, which, at current consumption of four trillion per year, is guaranteed to last for half a century—and this horizon is constantly being pushed back thanks to geological exploration and the shale revolution. The real danger lies not in the physical depletion of natural gas resources, but in the colossal dependence of key areas of life on the stability of supply and flexibility of gas generation, which serves as the main "conductor" of energy systems, instantly covering peak loads and dips in renewable energy, as the energy collapse in frozen Texas in 2021 so vividly demonstrated. However, the most devastating impact of a gas shortage will not be on heating, but on the planet's food security: gas is a key feedstock for the Haber-Bosch synthesis process, which produces nitrogen fertilizers that currently feed between a third and a half of humanity. A sharp rise or shortage of methane instantly drives up the price of ammonia, which impacts crop yields and leads to a food crisis and sky-high supermarket prices. No less critically dependent on gas are the petrochemical industries, which produce basic plastics and polymers, and the high-temperature industry, where gas flames are essential for melting glass and firing cement. The geographic imbalance, with Russia, Iran, Qatar, and the United States controlling the lion's share of resources, forces humanity to rely on the highly complex logistics of liquefied natural gas (LNG), which requires cooling methane to minus 162 degrees Celsius and transporting it in huge thermos tankers across the oceans. A dress rehearsal for a major crisis already took place in Europe in 2022, when a sharp reduction in pipeline supplies triggered the shutdown of chemical plants, soaring tariffs, and the emergency construction of floating LNG terminals. Ultimately, global energy security depends not on the date wells run dry, but on humanity's ability to smoothly restructure its industrial and agricultural systems to alternative tracks faster than geopolitical storms or resource depletion sever the invisible thread connecting distant deposits to warm homes and food on the table.
