SUPERBES ORCHIDÉES À DÉCOUVRIR : DES DENDROBIUMS D’UNE GRANDE BEAUTÉ AVEC LES CONSEILS DE COLOMBE
After introducing you in a previous video to the two most common Dendrobium species (see: • TOUT SAVOIR SUR DEUX DENDROBIUM TRÈS FACIL... ), our "Little Princess of Orchids," Colombe Lecoufle, invites you to discover some lesser-known and very different species that she has in her collection. She begins with a small, spreading Laotian plant: Dendrobium loddigesii, which bears pink flowers with a largely orange lip, pleasantly scented. This lithophytic orchid forms numerous keikis. Colombe then shows you Dendrobium venustum, an upright but medium-sized plant. It is an epiphytic plant with yellow flowers and a finely cut lip with red stripes. Continuing with the series of compact plants, Colombe presents Dendrobium platycaulon (now D. compressum), whose flattened pseudobulbs are quite recognizable. In autumn, it bears pretty clusters of creamy-white flowers at the tips of each pseudobulb. A plant that will appreciate the gentle warmth of your home. Our expert then picks up a very dense clump of Dendrobium lindleyi. This compact plant has developed a very abundant root system that completely envelops the pot. This epiphyte produces generous clusters of downy, orange-yellow flowers with a honey scent. Let's now move on to a curiosity, Dendrobium tetragonum, whose pseudobulbs are quadrangular. This Australian plant, which can form very long canes, is adorned with very original flowers with long, tapered, yellow-brown petals and sepals. Colombe then moves on to another Australian orchid that forms a beautiful, ruffled clump. This is Dendrobium kingianum, which grows on rocks. In late winter, it bears an abundance of purplish-pink flowers with a very pleasant fragrance. A plant to bring out into the garden from May to October to ensure its flowering. Advancing further in plant size, our orchid enthusiast presents Dendrobium speciosum, which forms large, very sturdy canes. This Australian species develops spectacular flower stalks in late winter composed of several dozen small, well-cut, white, and very fragrant flowers. Colombe concludes her presentation with the curious cultivars with corkscrew flowers known as Dendrobium 'Antelopes', their petals reminiscent of the spiral horns of greater kudus or blackbucks. To conclude this video with some practical advice, our specialist explains that it is not always necessary to repot Dendrobiums; a narrow pot is usually sufficient for them because most of the roots develop in the open air. The pot should be compared to the branch to which the plant clings in nature. A dynamic and spectacular video that will allow you to better understand the rich diversity of orchids and will undoubtedly make you want to try growing some of them as a change from the sacrosanct Phalaenopsis.
