As a lead player, one of the best things you can put your time into is preparing ideas and ammunition for playing over the most common cadences.. progressions that will appear in each and every song. I simply refer to this as “Cadence playing”. Essentially, a “cadence” is a transitional chord progression that sets up a strong pull from one chord to another, where the movement resolves. The V-I cadence, (known in the classical world as “The Perfect Cadence”), is by far the most common and is something that we’ll certainly get deep into in future lessons. But this lesson is focused on the more emotive and poignant sounding iv minor to I, (known as The “Plagal Cadence”). This is also extremely common and appears in most tunes at some point, and can even be subbed in the place of, (or on-top of!) the V-I cadence to create some really interesting tonalities, ala Django and Charlie Christian. This sound appears in everything from J.S Bach to Django, and from The Beatles to Radiohead. An absolutely essential piece of musical language to be fluent in. In this lesson we give it the soul-blues treatment and use a handful of elements to create an emotive, expressive, dynamic and tasteful solo.
