Understanding the Blues on a Deeper Level

In this lesson we explore how a traditional 12-bar blues progression can be transformed into a richer and more sophisticated jazz blues through the use of common harmonic devices and substitutions. Starting with a basic I-IV-V blues form, we'll gradually introduce quick changes, ii-V progressions, secondary dominants, diminished passing chords, minor plagal cadences, tritone substitutions and more, while examining how each concept creates stronger tension, resolution and voice leading within the harmony.
