(1) Introduction Depression is a brain disorder primarily caused by a lack of the brain chemical serotonin. Symptoms can be broadly categorized into three categories. First, "mental symptoms," such as depression, anxiety, loss of motivation, and impaired concentration. Second, "physical symptoms," such as insomnia, fatigue, nausea, and dizziness. Third, "behavioral changes," such as avoiding others or speaking in a lower voice. Treatment for depression is primarily carried out in three ways. The first is "rest," which involves getting sufficient rest away from stressors. For employed individuals, this often takes the form of a leave of absence from work. The second is "pharmacotherapy," which primarily involves the administration of antidepressants such as SSRIs, with other medications used in combination as needed. The third is "psychotherapy," which primarily involves reviewing stress management methods and, if necessary, considering the use of welfare services. (2) Depression Recovery The course of depression can be broadly divided into three stages. The first, or "acute phase," is a period of severe depressive symptoms and anxiety, during which rest is the top priority. The second, or "recovery phase," is a period in which rehabilitation is gradually implemented while preventing relapse and striving for improvement. The third, or "relapse prevention phase," is a period in which relapse prevention efforts are undertaken while returning to work and other social activities. The recovery phase is a period in which depression and anxiety improve after the acute phase, but challenges with motivation and activity remain. Motivation is difficult to regain, and patients quickly tire after starting activities. While individual differences exist, recovery often takes longer than the acute phase. The three main symptoms of the recovery phase are as follows: The first is "loss of motivation and interest," which means a persistent lack of motivation and interest in anything. The second is "fatigue and fatigue," which means feeling sluggish and easily fatigued even after starting activities. The third is "anxiety and impatience about the future," which means growing impatience over not getting back to normal, which can hinder recovery. (3) Four Tips for Spending the Depression Recovery Period 1. Increase Activity During recovery, even if you become mentally stable, significant challenges remain in terms of motivation and activity. During this period, it is important to continue rehabilitation by gradually increasing activity and gradually returning to your previous level of activity. It is important to avoid increasing activity all at once. Suddenly increasing activity on a good day can cause a strong backlash the next day, making it difficult to move around. Rather, valuing small daily efforts will lead to sustainable recovery. When choosing activities, it is best to prioritize those that are fun and bring a sense of accomplishment. Simply moving around can easily lead to stress and make it difficult to continue. Enjoyable activities can be continued without pain, and activities that give you a sense of accomplishment can motivate you the next day or later. Avoid the mindset of "waiting until you feel motivated." Simply waiting won't motivate you, and your symptoms may become chronic. Rather, it's more realistic to start with the mindset of "moving as rehabilitation" and use that stimulation to motivate yourself. ② Organize your lifestyle As your activity level increases, fatigue and stress tend to build up. Therefore, it's important to establish a healthy lifestyle as a foundation for recovery. Improving your sleep quality, in particular, will make daytime activity easier. To create a healthy lifestyle, make it a habit to be active during the day and relax and get enough sleep at night. This rhythm improves sleep quality, reducing fatigue and making daytime activity easier. Furthermore, increased daytime activity further improves sleep quality, creating a virtuous cycle. Improving your lifestyle is also important. Your mental state changes as a result of the accumulation of your daily actions. Reduce ...
