Brutal End of Nazi Commander who Massacred 60,000 People: Hamann

Joachim Hamann was an SS officer and one of the central perpetrators of mass murder during the Nazi occupation of Lithuania in the Second World War. Born in 1913 in Kiel, Germany, Hamann joined the Nazi Party’s paramilitary structures in the early 1930s, first entering the SA and later transferring to the SS. His rise within the security apparatus coincided with Adolf Hitler’s consolidation of power and the radicalization of Nazi racial policy. Following Operation Barbarossa in June 1941, Hamann was assigned to Einsatzkommando 3, a subunit of Einsatzgruppe A operating across the Baltic states. In Lithuania, he organized and commanded a mobile killing squad known as Rollkommando Hamann, composed of German SS personnel and Lithuanian collaborators. The unit’s mission was the systematic extermination of Jewish communities in rural areas, targeting towns and villages where ghettos had not yet been established. Between July and October 1941, Rollkommando Hamann carried out mass shootings across Lithuania. Victims were gathered, forced to undress, marched to prepared pits, and executed in coordinated firing squads. One of the most notorious episodes linked to Hamann’s unit was the Utena massacre, where thousands of Jewish men, women, and children were murdered. Historians estimate that the unit was responsible for the deaths of approximately 60,000 Lithuanian Jews, making it one of the most lethal mobile killing formations in the region. These crimes were later documented in the Karl Jäger Report, a chilling record detailing the near-total destruction of Lithuania’s Jewish population. After leaving Lithuania, Hamann continued SS service in Germany. He was never brought to trial; in July 1945, shortly after Germany’s defeat, he committed suicide while in Allied custody. His legacy remains tied to the brutality of the Einsatzgruppen and the early phase of the Holocaust in Eastern Europe.
