Brenda Cantillo: 27 años de celebrar La Purísima en Nicaragua

On November 28th, thousands of homes in Nicaragua began the novena in honor of the Immaculate Conception of Mary. Let's meet a woman from Managua who leads a life of love and fervor for the Immaculate Conception. Every night after arriving home from work, Doña Brenda Cantillo sets about making her small altar to the Virgin Mary more and more beautiful. It's the special place in her home where she prays and sings in the name of her relatives who are no longer in this world or live outside of Nicaragua. "I am originally from León; I was born in León and raised in Managua, but my entire family is from León. This tradition has been passed down from generation to generation. For as long as I can remember, I've realized that the entire family who already lived in Managua, in León, would gather to celebrate the Immaculate Conception, and we would go out and shout," said the faithful devotee of the Virgin. For more than six months, she has been preparing to guarantee the toast to an average of 1,200 people who come to sing to her image, which she has had for 27 years thanks to a gift from a friend, but which she believes is by design of the Virgin Mary. Marian Fervor in Nicaragua Cantillo said that after her grandmother's death, the image was given to her for a birthday, and from that moment on, she began celebrating it in the Nicaraguan capital. Likewise, the purchases begin in June, with contributions from her husband, children, and other relatives. As part of this toast, she has about 120 piñatas so that the children who come to honor the Conception of Mary leave with a smile and their parents with a reason to rejoice. The woman said that every year she bought toys or balls, but four years ago, she decided to have piñatas made in Masaya and give them to the children in Nicaragua. This year, she plans to create an altar that resembles the facade of a church, and she already has all the materials to assemble the structure, thanks to the support of one of her sons' girlfriends.
