Working Out and Playing Instruments with Ulnar Nerve Pain

Many of you that visit this channel are dealing with ulnar nerve issues but enjoy working out and playing an instrument. In this question, Matt asks in specific about the 90 degree rule, which is in reference to the higher likelihood of subluxation past 90 degree flexion of the elbow. By limiting how often you flex your elbow past 90 degrees regardless of the activity, you can in a sense minimize the irritation. This isn't set in stone though as you can have irritation at any point of flexion and perhaps a milder case of irritation, but still significant irritation that can become cumulative over time. I always recommend adhering to the 90 degree rule if you're working out, but you can still walk away from your workouts with pain and numbness. No one can decide when enough is enough for you, but if your ulnar nerve pain starts to interfere with daily life so much so you are at wits end, I'd say that's more than time to see a hand surgeon about a more permanent solution. Hope that helps and as always keep the questions coming! Aloha, Marc
