New York City emergency services closed several streets and evacuated hotels, offices, and homes in Manhattan on Tuesday after structural columns in a skyscraper under construction buckled, firefighters reported. The 38-story building, which formerly housed the headquarters of pharmaceutical company Pfizer, is located near Grand Central Station and the United Nations headquarters and is being remodeled to convert the offices into apartments. "Upon arrival, units determined that two columns buckled on the 21st and 22nd floors," the New York City Fire Department said in a statement. "Squatting occurred between the 21st and 26th floors. Approximately 40 units, 130 firefighters, and Emergency Medical Services personnel were mobilized.
