In a dramatic race against time, international brigades and rescue teams are concentrating all their efforts on Tower C of the OPP-26 housing complex in Caribe, Caraballeda (Vargas state), where the search continues for two children, ages 8 and 13, trapped under the collapsed structures. The deployment is being led by a contingent of rescuers from El Salvador—150 of whom have just been relieved by a new technical commission sent by their government to join the 300 already operating in the area—along with firefighters from Caracas, Yaracuy, and Trujillo, paramedics, and official observers from the United Nations (UN). Despite nearly two weeks having passed since the twin earthquakes of magnitudes 7.2 and 7.5, the mother of the children remains at the foot of the ruins with unwavering faith, supported by neighborhood and community prayer chains that are urgently requesting donations of tools, drinking water, ice, and food to maintain operations. While the UN confirms the magnitude of the catastrophe on the central coast, the victims' families denounce a severe "dilemma" and lack of information from local authorities regarding the whereabouts and identities of the recovered bodies, as well as the fate of the injured taken to health centers. The collective trauma is heightened by the memory of the 1999 mudslide on the central coast. According to the latest official figures from the Chavista regime, the tragedy has already left more than 3,500 dead, over 16,000 injured, 17,000 families displaced, and an alarming record of more than 1,000 aftershocks, keeping the entire population of northern Venezuela on edge.
