Wrap-up, including old (and offensive?!) mystery novels

Two of the books I read this week didn't age well. Were they seen as offensive when they were written? I'm not sure, but old books contain old prejudices, and you can't escape that if you like old books. My overall feeling when I've read something in an old book that we now recognize as offensive is to appreciate that, as much as it feels like things are getting worse in the world, in a lot of ways things have improved. Please join me for discussion of the four books I read this week, and let me know what you think about offensive content in old books. How much are books spoiled for you if they didn't age well?
