What I DON’T Buy Anymore (Because of the 1940s)
A few years ago, my love of the 1940s was all about the dresses, the films, the music on crackly radios, and the romance of the era. But the more I researched how ordinary people actually lived during the 1940s — particularly women managing homes during wartime — the more my mindset began to change. Before the prosperity of the 1950s, people simply lived with less. Not because it was fashionable. Not because it was minimalist. But because it was necessary. And slowly, without even meaning to, that attitude began to influence the way I spend money today. In this video, I’m sharing 10 things I no longer buy (or buy far less of) because of what studying the 1940s taught me: – Fast fashion – Fast food – Endless subscriptions – Duplicates of things I already own – Cheaply made homeware – Excess beauty products – Disposable items – Trendy gadgets – Overbuying groceries – Shopping as entertainment This isn’t about living like it’s 1943. It’s about learning from a generation that understood repair, restraint, resourcefulness and contentment in a way modern culture often forgets. In a world constantly telling us to upgrade, consume and accumulate, I’ve found surprising peace in choosing less. Has studying history ever changed how you live today? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments.
