JOSEPH CAMPBELL | Entrevista com Bob Walter – Parte 1

One of the greatest names in the study of comparative mythology in the world is the American Joseph Campbell. Today, anyone wishing to study myths, from the Greeks to the Hindus, from primitive to medieval times, must turn to Campbell's vast body of work. Besides being a wonderful teacher, he also established direct connections between mythology and the psychology of Carl Gustav Jung. Campbell's work offered a broad repertoire for the arts, painting, literature, and can even be seen in cinema. One of Campbell's most illustrious students was none other than George Lucas, director of the Star Wars saga. Together they created the story of Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader. In other words, Lucas was a phenomenon. But the master behind the film's genius was Campbell. The author of THE HERO'S JOURNEY, THE HERO WITH A THOUSAND FACES, and THE POWER OF MYTH, died in 1987. And he left an enviable legacy. Imagine HOW MUCH history this Aries had to tell!? And guess who took care of that? Bob Walter. Campbell was already familiar with Bob Walter's work as a prestigious Broadway theater producer and director in New York. Then came an unusual invitation. Campbell asked if Bob wouldn't drop everything to work together. Imagine that! And that's what happened. Bob worked with Campbell for 10 years as the editorial director of all of Campbell's work. And, alongside Jean Erdman, the mythologist's wife, he created the Joseph Campbell Foundation. It's as if he became the "intellectual heir" to all of Campbell's work, preserving the legacy of this great teacher. In recent years, Bob has been working to spread mythology around the world with a symbolic and psychological perspective. He has a more practical and pedagogical approach than an academic one, and speaks of myth as a living tool for personal and cultural transformation, very close to symbolic psychology and Jungian imagination. In 2017, Bob was in Brazil, in Brasília, for a series of lectures. And I had the privilege of learning from him. At the time, I interviewed him. But, for some reason, this material disappeared for many years. Recently I managed to recover it. And I would very much like to share it with you. This is, therefore, a multi-part interview, in which we talk about the relationship between friends, about the incredible work they developed together, about some details of Campbell's life, about mythology, psychology, and the FUTURE.
