Synchronicity vs. Acausal Orderedness: A Deeper Look

Hello brothers and sisters, and welcome to the Jungian Aion. The video opens with Marie-Louise von Franz in conversation, unpacking Jung’s late ideas on synchronicity with rare clarity. She distinguishes acausal orderedness (the “just-so” laws of nature and mind) from synchronicity as meaning created in time, illustrates it with lived examples - the mistaken black dress after a death, telepathic future dreams that exclude causal explanation - and shows how birth itself can be seen both causally and synchronistically (as in astrology). She also cautions against sliding into primitive magical thinking, points to physics analogies (singularities), and affirms a margin of human freedom within the archetypal patterns our lives are ordered by. After a short commentary by me, I present Jung's fascinating letter from 1960, where he explores the mysterious connection between the psyche and seemingly acausal events - what he termed synchronicity. Jung discusses the role of archetypes, emotional states, and unconscious processes in shaping paranormal experiences such as telepathy, precognition, and psychokinesis.
