KÖLN hat offiziell einen zweiten Rhein – und es ist GIGANTISCH!

Cologne officially has a second Rhine – and it's gigantic! Cologne now officially has a "second Rhine" – but nobody can see it: A new Rhine siphon, a wastewater tunnel, is being built beneath the real Rhine, keeping the city running in the background. Around 25 meters deep, between Stammheim (the main wastewater treatment plant) and Niehl, a tunnel is boring its way through the ground so that Cologne doesn't end up cutting corners in the wrong places when faced with heavy rain, growth, and aging infrastructure. In this video, you'll go down with me into the invisible layer of the city: Why the siphon from 1928 is now a risk, how Cologne is building the new tunnel (shafts, machinery, tunneling), and what will really change when the new backbone eventually takes over – more capacity, better control, and manageable maintenance. A project that's only "perfect" if you never have to think about it in your daily life.
