MEIYO (名誉) — The Weight of a Name — Sixth entry in the Bushidō Series Meiyo (名誉) is the Bushidō virtue of honor — but the word in the samurai tradition meant something more demanding than "good reputation." Meiyo is the recognition that a name is not a private possession but a debt owed across generations. The samurai who carried Meiyo carried the names of his ancestors before him and the names of his descendants who had not yet been born, and he understood that everything he did either added to that lineage or stained it. To live with Meiyo was to live as if every action were witnessed — not by other people, but by the dead and the unborn. It was the strictest mirror a person could stand before. Honor in this tradition is not the loud public kind that demands praise. It is the quiet, almost lonely kind that demands the right action even when no one will ever know. The middle of the volume builds toward a moment of standing — not running into battle, but holding ground. The final movement is the inheritance: what is left when a person has done what their name required of them, and the weight is set down because it has been carried well.
