REI (礼) — The Quiet Discipline of Respect — Fourth entry in the Bushidō Series Rei (礼) is the Bushidō virtue of respect, courtesy, and right conduct. In the samurai tradition, Rei was not surface politeness or empty ceremony. It was the outward shape of an inner discipline — the recognition that every person, every encounter, every act of attention carried weight. A samurai who could fight without restraint was dangerous. A samurai who could restrain himself in the presence of an enemy, a stranger, a servant, or a child was something else entirely. Rei is the willingness to honor the moment as it actually is, rather than as one's emotions would prefer it to be. It is the bow that costs nothing and reveals everything. — On this volume — This volume turns inward and softens its voice. After the warmth of Jin and the heartbeat of Yū, Rei is the held breath before speaking — composed, attentive, deliberate. The instrumentation favors clarity over density.
