I never expected to see Koseki Yoshizawa's guardian lion statues at Kitami Hikawa Shrine, so I was thrilled when I found them. I first saw Koseki Yoshizawa's guardian lion statues at Hosoyama Shinmei Shrine in Yomiuri Land, from a high point on the stairs. Their expressions completely overturned my previous image of guardian lion statues; I was deeply impressed. Since then, I've become a fan of Koseki Yoshizawa's work. His guardian lion statues have soft, rounded curves and a plump appearance; their expressions lack any menacing intensity, instead evoking a sense of familiarity. However, I was very disappointed that they were placed so high up that I could only look up at them.
