Founded by Master Taicho in 717, this shrine served as the Echizen base for worship of Mount Hakusan. It's said that the goddess who guided Taicho to Mount Hakusan appeared at Omitarashi Pond. The grounds are covered in beautiful green moss, earning it the nickname "Moss Palace" and "Moss Temple." On both sides of the stone-paved path leading to the worship hall, you can see the magnificent moss spreading among the trees. The worship hall, constructed during the Edo period, retains a Heian-era atmosphere. Before it was burned down during the Ikko Ikki uprising in 1574, it was larger than Sanjusangendo Temple in Kyoto. Gozen Gamine Honsha Shrine enshrines Izanami-no-Mikoto, the highest peak of Mount Hakusan. Sannomiya Shrine is known as the god of safe childbirth.
