Flower Drum Song: A Lost Gem

Flower Drum Song might be the forgotten Rodgers and Hammerstein movie that actually deserves another look. I went into this one almost completely blind. I didn’t know the story, didn’t know the songs, and honestly didn’t expect much after working through several other Rodgers and Hammerstein film adaptations. But Flower Drum Song surprised me. The songs may not be as memorable as Oklahoma!, The King and I, South Pacific, or The Sound of Music, but this movie has something many of those adaptations struggle with: an actual story. There are clear characters, real romantic complications, funny performances, and a plot that starts at the beginning and actually moves toward an ending. In this video, I react to Flower Drum Song, talk through what works, what doesn’t, why some of the dream sequences still feel bizarre, and why this may be my favorite Rodgers and Hammerstein movie so far.
