Catching the Last of the Piling — Final Push on the Manchester Bolton Bury Canal

Inside Manchester Bolton Bury Canal Restoration, this film captures the final push of the piling machine as it completes its work on this section of the canal. You’ll see the rig driving piles into the ground, concrete being fed in from the temporary yard at the garden centre, and the whole operation running at full intensity. During filming, a local resident stops for a chat. I’d only just landed back in Manchester myself, still dressed for holiday, but couldn’t resist heading straight to site to document the moment. A quick engineering note: The foundations don’t “dry” the concrete inside the piles cures underground. It gains strength through a chemical reaction rather than evaporation. Within a couple of days the piles reach safe working strength, and over the next few weeks they continue building up to full design strength.
