A Mazda 3 arrived at our service center with complaints of engine misfiring. After checking the spark plugs, the engine wouldn't start, the "P" light indicating the transmission in park was out, the immobilizer light was blinking, and the car couldn't recognize the key (immobilizer). Diagnostics using a Kingbolen scanner (Thinkdiag, Launch) and the Ediag Diagzone program revealed two errors in the instrument cluster: U0100 and U2510. There was no communication between the PCM (engine control module) and the instrument cluster. A simple way to check the ignition coils is to check the engine control unit and replace it. After replacing the PCM, the car started, but the check engine light came on and an unrecoverable error code, P2088, appeared: open OCV valve. The problem is that the engine control unit is from a different year vehicle and has a different connector pinout. The valve control contacts are in a different connector. The ECU needs to be re-pinned.
