Leg 30! - Heading to #dubai !! from Muscat After an unexpected change of plans yesterday on leg 29, our #original destination, #sur, turned out not to have a usable airport in #msfs24 or in #reality it seems.. lol so we #diverted #north to #ooms #muscat to the #nearest #airport While exploring the area, we discovered two fascinating airfields near #sur. The first is an old #worldwarii #airstrip, believed to have been constructed during the 1940s when the region was strategically important for Allied operations and ferry routes across the Middle East. Today, only the remnants of the runway remain, gradually being reclaimed by the surrounding #desert. The second is far more mysterious—a 4 #kilometre-long runway built as part of the proposed #rasalhaddairport project near #rasalhadd. Construction began in the early 2000s as part of Oman's plans to develop tourism and improve access to the eastern coastline. The runway was completed to an impressive length of around 4,000 #metres, capable of handling the world's largest passenger aircraft. However, the airport itself was never finished after development priorities changed, leaving behind a fully paved runway with no operational terminal or commercial flights. It remains one of Oman's most unusual abandoned infrastructure projects. Today's flight departs #ooms #muscat for #omdb #dubai, in the #unitedarabemirates. Before setting course across the #gulfofoman, we'll make a short sightseeing detour to fly the full length of the abandoned runway for a closer look from the air.
