This episode starts in late January, when a local welder finally installs locks on my gates and front door. Until now, my village house in Boka had never actually been locked since I bought it. Then we jump forward about a month to early March, when I hit the 180-day residency mark in Serbia and begin dealing with bureaucracy. First stop: MUP in Zrenjanin, where I obtain official confirmation that I’ve been living in Serbia for more than 180 days so I can exchange my American driver’s license for a Serbian one. But the day quickly turns into a full bureaucratic tour of Banat: • Geodetic Survey Institute - asking if foreigners can buy a house located on forest land (I'm looking to buy a 2nd house for weekend use) • Electric company - trying (again) to change the name on my electricity bill and figure out why they keep charging me when the house uses almost no power • Sečanj police station - submitting documents for the driver’s license exchange The police took my U.S. license and told me the Serbian one could take 1-2 weeks to arrive. In the meantime, they said I am not allowed to drive. The problem: I drove there. After a coffee and a brief tour of the iconic Yugoslav-era Hotel Crveni Cvet (Hotel "Red Flower"), and a carp soup lunch in the neighboring village Sutjeska, the episode ends with a stop back at my house in Boka, where I start asking neighbors who renovated the nicest houses on the street.
