KBS Documentary Insight - Fighting Never Ends The volleyball team at Oga Elementary School in Yesan County, South Chungcheong Province. Founded in 1982, the team maintained its tradition and played countless matches, but facing the reality of declining student numbers, it was decided to disband last year. However, the children persevered, playing together on the court until the very end. KBS 1TV Documentary Insight chronicled the first year of the Oga Elementary School volleyball team, capturing the dreams and growth of seven boys who cried and laughed over a single volleyball ball. ■ Oga Elementary Volleyball Team, a 43-Year-Old Tradition, Disbands Due to Declining Student Enrollment With a total of 44 students, the volleyball team, once the sole athletic team and pride of Oga Elementary School in Yesan County, South Chungcheong Province, has disappeared into history. Last year, only seven players remained on the team. Five of them are graduating, and the team is destined to disband at the end of the year. The volleyball team members varied in personality and physique, but on the court, they shared a common dream. Ji-hang, who came to Korea from China at the age of four, demonstrated leadership as team captain. Tae-woong dedicated himself to training, traveling 100 kilometers a day from Iksan, North Jeolla Province, to Yesan, South Chungcheong Province. Min-gyeom, the smallest of the team but a true volleyball fan, infused the team with his spirited play. Eun-bin, as a setter, played a pivotal role with her precise passing and game management. "I cherish this moment, playing with these bubbly guys." The small team didn't mean it lacked skill. The Oga Elementary School volleyball team proved its strength by winning the 2023 Chungnam Youth Sports Festival. At the center of this success was coach Jang Hyo-sil. Having led the team for eight years, he has consistently nurtured the players' skills and saved the team from numerous near-disbandment attempts. He taught the children not only skill but also the tenacity to persevere. He encouraged them to mentally count "18" when facing fear in a match, emphasizing that giving their all until the very end is more important than winning or losing. ■ The passion of seven players that couldn't be broken even by injuries and illness Facing disbandment, the volleyball team had only one ultimate goal: to never give up in the remaining two competitions under the name "Ogacho." Coach Jang and the children pledged to give their all in the remaining games. However, an unexpected crisis arose. Before the 3rd Summer Land's End Haenam National Elementary School Volleyball Tournament, two team members contracted pneumonia, and their main attacker suffered a leg injury, making regular training difficult. There was no giving up. Coach Jang, acting as an even more determined "Tiger Teacher," rallied the players. Despite the grueling training, the children persevered silently. Knowing their time together was running out, no one gave up. ■ On the final court, there was no giving up... "We won't give up on fighting!" "You know tomorrow's opponents won't be easy, right? But let's fight to the end. Let's never give up on fighting." And so began the 57th Chugye Cup National Elementary School Volleyball Tournament. This is truly the final match for the Ogacho Volleyball Team. Ogacho secured a spot in the quarterfinals with consecutive wins in the preliminaries, but ahead of them stood the championship contender, Gyeonggi Namyang Elementary School. A tough match was expected, but the kids stepped onto the court with a more fervent heart than ever. The Ogacho Volleyball Team grew and became one through volleyball. They learned how to challenge themselves through sweat and perseverance, and cherished the value of never giving up. Although the team has disbanded, their dreams remain undiminished. Each on their own path, on a new court, they will once again shout "Fighting!" The Ogacho Volleyball Team's final challenge. How will their story be remembered?
