Even common heat sources in everyday life can instantly lead to burn injuries. A single burn can leave lifelong scars and aftereffects. How can we prevent it, and what should we do if we suffer a burn? In the EBS episode "Myung-eun - Burns," we learn how to survive burns with Professor Kim Do-heon, a burn surgeon at Korea's only university hospital specialized in burn treatment who has dedicated 30 years to treating burns. △The bitter scars left by sweet sujeonggwa: A warning about burn injuries for the elderly and children A 71-year-old woman who raised nine children in the countryside all her life. While boiling sujeonggwa to share with her family, she briefly looked away, and the boiling sujeonggwa spilled, causing second- and third-degree burns to her back and arms. She was admitted to the intensive care unit in critical condition. Elderly people, in particular, are at greater risk for more serious burns due to their reduced ability to react quickly. Even curious children are no exception. An 11-month-old boy grabbed a coffee pot, and the hot water spilled on him, severely burning both hands. The boy, too, endured painful burn treatment without knowing the cause. Burn accidents can happen to anyone. How can we prevent and treat them? △Severely burned patients on the brink, fighting for their lives. Kim Ga-young, 39, was brought to the emergency room of a burn hospital. She suffered third-degree burns all over her body after a gas cylinder exploded while she was working at a restaurant. The intense heat damaged her respiratory system, requiring mechanical ventilation. However, burns are more dangerous because they threaten her overall health. When skin is extensively damaged, immunity drops dramatically, and the risk of infection and complications increases. Severely burned patients face the threat of life and death, and begin multiple skin grafts and lengthy treatment. △The never-ending battle after burns: the battle against aftereffects A 57-year-old man suffered second- and third-degree burns all over his body in an electrical explosion two years ago. Waking up in the intensive care unit, he endured painful dressing treatments and five skin graft surgeries. But the treatment wasn't the end. During the recovery process, hypertrophic scars, also known as "scars," developed, and severe contractures developed in his shoulder joint. He was unable to even half-raise his arm, and ultimately had to undergo scar reconstruction surgery again.
