Most patients with aortic dissection are asymptomatic until they are suddenly brought to the emergency room with an aortic rupture. Aortic dissection is a critical emergency, with a mortality rate increasing by 1% per hour and a 50% mortality rate within two days. However, few hospitals currently offer emergency aortic surgery 24/7, forcing patients to search for a suitable hospital. To ensure that no more patients' lives are lost on the road, some are creating teams that can assemble whenever an emergency patient arrives and making their voices heard. The 2022 thoracic surgery resident dropout rate is 24.1%. One in four residents will drop out.
