VO₂ max represents the body's maximum capacity to take in, transport, and utilize oxygen during exercise. In this process, the heart plays a key role, as it is responsible for pumping oxygenated blood to the active muscles. During exercise, the heart responds by increasing heart rate and stroke volume, which raises cardiac output and allows more oxygen to be delivered to the tissues. Over the long term, training leads to adaptations such as increased heart chamber size, greater pumping efficiency, and a reduction in resting heart rate. These adaptations are fundamental for improving VO₂ max, as it depends heavily on the cardiovascular system's ability to transport oxygen to the muscles. In other words, a more efficient heart allows for more intense efforts to be sustained for longer periods.
