JAKARTA, KOMPAS.TV - The peace agreement between Iran and the United States has been welcomed by many, as it is seen as capable of easing the global economic turmoil that has been triggered over the past few months by conflict and disruptions to global energy distribution. International law expert Hikmahanto Juwana said Indonesia and other countries should have high hopes for the agreement. The six-week war has triggered various economic issues, ranging from oil prices and supply chains to a global economic slowdown. According to Hikmahanto, the current agreement is still in its initial phase, a memorandum of understanding (MOU) valid for 60 days. During this period, various further negotiations will take place, including regarding Iran's nuclear program. However, he warned that there is still the potential for obstacles from Israel that could derail the peace process. Hikmahanto stated that one of the key points of the agreement is the normalization of activity in the Strait of Hormuz. According to him, this strategic shipping lane is a major factor that has fueled global concerns due to the surge in oil prices. Meanwhile, INDEF Economist Abra Talattov assessed that the normalization of the Strait of Hormuz would have a positive impact on Indonesia. Abra revealed that the government had even prepared various scenarios for when crude oil prices soared above US$100 per barrel. According to him, if global oil prices continue to decline following the peace agreement and normalization of the Strait of Hormuz, the government could save on energy subsidies and allocate them to more productive spending. Abra added that the public also hopes for an adjustment to non-subsidized fuel prices if global oil prices actually fall. What do you think?
