Is Vučić's resignation a political maneuver? | Ivanka Popović
Serbia has found itself in the European spotlight after President Aleksandar Vučić announced his resignation. However, there is little indication that this represents a genuine concession to the student-led protest movement that has been challenging his rule for months. “I believe this is primarily an attempt by Aleksandar Vučić to remain in power,” Ivanka Popović, former rector and ProGlas activist, told World Talks. Many observers expect Vučić to seek the post of prime minister after stepping down as president. “Behind this resignation lies a prearranged plan to prolong his hold on power,” Popović added. According to Popović, what many Serbians are demanding above all is the rule of law and institutions that serve citizens rather than the ruling party. Serbia is also facing a difficult balancing act between advancing its path toward EU membership and maintaining close ties with Russia and China. Join Sascha Fahrbach and his guest as they discuss Serbia under Vučić’s leadership, the strength of the protest movement, and the real expectations of Serbian society.
