Prokofiev: Piano Sonata No 7 (1958) Richter

Serge Prokofiev Piano Sonata in B-Flat Major, Op. 83 1. Allegro inquieto ( 0:07 ) 2. Andante caloroso ( 8:06 ) 3. Precipitato ( 14:16) Sviatoslav Richter, pianist Recorded on June 26, 1958 at Grand Hall of the Conservatoire, Moscow This is one of Prokofiev's greatest piano works, but it is also one of his most difficult. Especially in the third movement, Pecipitato. Although the score does not call for it the vast majority of pianists, including the greatest ones, overuse the pedal, change tempo, and quickly fall apart. This, like the Appassionata, is one of those pieces I find that most pianists, IMHO, do not play well. Then there's Richter. In both live and studio performances he played the finale with metronome-like precision, using the power of his hands instead of pedal, and bringing the music to its conclusion at full expressive power. The rest of the sonata is equally masterful. Richter threads the needle between Jazz and modernism to deliver a performance that is truly unforgettable.
